Interview with Jennifer Dean, aka, Jenny founder of the Ragdoll Cat site

I ‘met’ Jenny online in a Yahoo Ragdoll cat group back in 06 or 07 shortly before I adopted Tyler and Trinity. Her website is terrific plus she is also a cat writer for her blogs and an author. She does lots of interviews, product testing and is just full of helpful information and readers.

She has interviewed me for all of my books and has featured Tyler and Trinity twice. After this last time, I asked to turn the tables and interview her.

The making of the covers for the Appalachian Journey series by CC Tillery [part 1]

I met Cyndi, one of the authors of CC Tillery at a writers group. I thought we connected as we have several things in common. We are both authors, we both love animals, we both enjoy where we live and we both value family.

UA BA (Mobile)I don’t remember how many titles Cyndi had out when I joined the writers group, just that she was a member and an author long before me and had experience in areas of writing I didn’t even know existed. Some of the gals from the group started meeting for lunch before the meetings and she mentioned she wanted a new cover for one of her angel series books that she pulled from print. She described it and I started working on it. She liked what I came up with.

I’m not sure of the sequence of events because we were both working on our own books and I was hired to do a cover for another group member but when it came time for Cyndi and Christy to release Beloved Woman they gave me the opportunity to design the cover.

Style sheet BWBW title fonts (Mobile)I’d read Whistling Woman and I think Moonfixer at this point so I had some idea of the mood of the series. Starting an idea board or style sheet was my first step. Pinterest works great for this too especially if the author and I are collaborating long distance. Choosing a text style came next. I looked at this title and book #4 Wise Woman in case I was hired for that cover also. I listened to what this third book in the series was about and bounced ideas off Cyndi.

BW chip card (Mobile)The biggest request was that Bessie, the main character in their series be on the cover. She showed me some photos of Bessie in the right time frame over lunch and I knew I wanted to work on the one that was actually a postcard. Since this book was the third in the series I wanted to keep the old look but wanted to start more of a theme with the series.

Not sure why ‘beloved’ made me think of blue but it did. I made one proof in blue and one proof in brown and they let their readers choose. Hands down the brown won. Not quite being ready to throw in the blue completely I used it with the brown. This was an old small family photo postcard that needed editing. It needed people removed, damaged parts repaired and contrast added. I added part of the postcard on the front and a photo their dad John Tillery painted to the back. The front texture behind the photos is leather and the back texture is from a photo I took of Queen Anne’s lace because Bessie uses herbs, flowers and such in the books in her Cherokee medicine.

I designed a series and imprint logo to complete the design.spring creek press (Custom) (Custom)AJ series logo (Custom)

Both Cyndi and Christy are very generous in the freedom they give me to create a cover.

They also typically give me plenty of time to let my ideas stew. After the cover for Beloved Woman, they hired me to redesign the second book in the series Moonfixer.

Look for a post on that soon.

Check out the Appalachian Journey series by CC Tillery, but remember this is the 3rd book in the series and they’re better if you read them in order.

Boulder Dog Food Company, L.L.C. Voluntarily Recalls Seven Bags of Turkey Sprinkles, 3 oz with A “Best By” Date of “05/18/16, 05/28/2016 and 05/30/2016” Due to Possible Salmonella Health Risk

ZiwiPeak sent samples to aid in our new pet food search.

I’ve never had a company respond to a request for samples before!

Ziwi samples (2)-sm

I wrote Ziwipeak and asked for meat only canned samples for Tyler and Trinity to try. I couldn’t find them local and I didn’t want to buy a case before knowing if they would eat it. A package arrived timely and wrapped nicely with lots of info and even some of their ‘air dried’ food.

Ziwi samples (1)-sm

I received two moist can flavors Ziwipeak Rabbit and Lamb, and Ziwipeak Beef. I haven’t fed the beef yet but they loved the Rabbit and Lamb and it was the pate’ they like. They also make a venison and a lamb formula.

They sent ZiwiPeak air-dried venison and fish (they have 3 other non-fish flavors but sent me 3 of this one with fish. I am trying to avoid fish with Trinity so I gave the air dried samples to a friend.  I’m not against feeding air-dried at nighttime, but I’d prefer to feed meat only for urine pH.

We still have the beef canned flavor to try, and I’d like to get the other 3 meat only cans.

Here is our search so far into a new canned food they can both eat at night when Tyler needs food to be nice to his sister and I can’t feed them separate.

Trinity is still having urinary issues and peeing over the edge of the box. She really doesn’t like the c/d or s/d canned. As much as I don’t want to feed her dry I’m going today to pick up a new bag of s/d before she has crystals that get so big they can’t be dissolved with food. Me wanting her to eat canned only is just not doing it because she’s not eating enough to acidify her urine when I feed them their separate foods in the morning.

thank you ZiwiPeak
