I didn’t plan on missing all of my high school class reunion events but we’d already missed the water release once and I really, really wanted to see it and I thought I’d have time for both. The dam water release at High Falls at Lake Glenville on the West Fork Tuckasegee River near Cashiers is opened as a recreational water release just a handful of times each year. This year it fell on our anniversary which we missed because it was too soon after my shoulder surgery and it was released again on my birthday… Serendipitous? I thought so! Continue reading →
Pretty sure all my friends know I’m directionally challenged and if June didn’t know that – she does now.
So hubby said we could go interstate or highway 176 to find Melrose Falls. We chose 176. BUT even though I did hear him say Melrose falls was past Pearson falls we took 176 then I still gave the wrong directions to turn left on Ozone dr. Thankfully after driving around for a bit, a Polk County Sherrif was pulling out of a road and we flagged him down. Turns out I was following Adams book from the interstate and we should’ve just passed Ozone Dr. The officer said the small 2 car pull off was between twin bridges. Got it, I can navigate by landmarks. The plan was to see Melrose falls before Pearson falls gate opened.
I’ve now been to Roan Mountain three times, to the gardens and Jane’s Bald twice, Round Bald and Grassy Ridge once. We walked the Roan High Bluff at Cloudland Trail once too. It’s been devilishly hot, in the 90s here lately to do much outdoors. We worked in the yard on Saturday and I ended up dehydrated and exhausted with a splitting headache by dinner time. I wanted to go up in elevation enough it was cooler. Continue reading →
A day out enjoying God’s creation with the man I married is just what I needed. I had tried to go see a Sunburst Falls while hubby was at his yearly golf weekend but things just didn’t work out. I really wanted to see it but he really preferred I not go alone and said we could go when he got back even though he is extremely busy right now. Boy, am I glad I waited.
I prayed nothing unexpected would happen with Tyler while we were gone and we took off for the day to see a list of six waterfalls I picked out. Finding them along with my shoulder issues were both greatly helped by my husband. All of them had mileage from an intersection but I wanted to see Sunburst Falls first so he had to add and subtract mileage to find where to park for the next waterfalls on the list. Plus he was better at maneuvering my low sitting car around the uneven ground and even thru water.
Between my shoulder, our cats and hubbies schedule we sure haven’t done much hiking this year. I fetched the bear spray from my pristine camera backpack and we took off for our make up anniversary outing we postponed.
We changed the place to see and decided on Raven Cliff Falls in SC. Raven Cluff Falls is on Matthews Creek in Ceasars Head Park. It is the tallest waterfall in South Carolina, somewhere between 320 and 400 feet, depending on what you read and where they measured as it looks like the start of it could be hard to determine. Regardless of the exact size, it was a site to see. Continue reading →
